On New Year’s Eve Sensation landed on the Australian shores hosting a sold-out gig at Melbourne's Telstra Dome, an event that has since claimed the title of the biggest single room dance event in the world, attracting over 40,000 partygoers. The creators of Sensation are Dutch firm ID&T. Working with Australian Technical Producer James Klein of Atmosphere Events, who spent three months last year in Europe working on a range of ID&T’s shows. During that time planning began for the Melbourne Sensation. The venue posed many technical and logistic problems. The floor of the venue floats over the carpark creating weight loading issues, while the moving roof of the venue created technical rigging issues. Scheduled soccer matches immediately before and after event led to a scheduling challenge. James spent a great deal of time solving these dilemmas; load in and load out became a work of genius with the gear stored in a purpose built warehouse adjacent to the Dome where it could be accessed as required before, during and after the event. This was the first time ever that an event has been allowed to rig out of Telstra Dome’s famous moving roof and ID&T’s chief rigger flew from the Netherlands to meet the structural engineers last year to state their case. Basically the show could not be done without this rigging and as a result a 100 ton was allowed to be rigged from the moving roof under strict guidelines. |
